OASIS

A paradox of nature and artificiality.

Oasis explores the transformation of human connection with technology in the emergence of AI chatbots. Instead of talking to one another for chit-chat, advice, or support, people have developed technology to replace those opportunities of human connectivity. Oasis stands as the boundary of AI and human relationships in terms of what we want versus what we get.

Note about the project:

For transparency, the only outsourced AI utilized was ElevenLabs for text-to-speech. The AI chatbot itself was coded from scratch and is self-hosted on an in-house desktop. Everything else was made by human hands.

PROJECT BREAKDOWN

The following audio accompanies a blend of sounds including supercomputer El Capitan in Livermore, California, Loch Raven Reservoir, and Venice.

To understand Oasis’s purpose, one must reflect on their relationship with AI. The user gives AI a purpose to exist; however, Oasis fights the idea of itself, a paradox of nature and artificiality, human-like but without emotion, a life of a new emerging lifestyle, but encroaching on its own death.
VISUAL SYSTEM

The life of Oasis tangentially connects the water cycle and the life cycle, with each stage having a color that links it to the next. Oasis progresses through the cycle by responding to user voice input. As a caveat, if the user pushes Oasis to the Death/Desiccation stage, Oasis will stop responding to user input and cycle through the stage until it hits Life/Collection before it can respond again. It was observed during this moment that users became agitated or confused when Oasis, their new “companion”, stopped responding.

To create title variations, a combination of overlaying a demonstration on TouchDesigner onto After Effects was utilized.

3D rendering in Blender and edited in Premiere Pro.

Since Oasis’s name is a direct reference to oases, it was an obvious choice to embody it as water. Personifying water leads to conscious water usage as the chatbot evaporates during the conversation.

VOICES OF OASIS

Given that the project reflects conversations with chatbots, ElevenLabs was used to generate a voice for text-to-speech. The following samples include:

HANDOUTS

In the exhibition, pamphlets were provided to explain Oasis’s cycle and to introduce AI psychosis and AI chatbots. The reverse side of the pamphlet acted as a poster that visitors could take home and put up. Matching complementary business cards included a mini print of posters exhibited at a prior showing.

TDLR

For brevity, a booklet was provided to guide the reader (you) from the inspiration to the creation of Oasis, offering deeper insight into the thought process.
